Message from IFRC SG on World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 8th May 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Every May 8th, we mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day to celebrate the unwavering compassion and commitment of millions of volunteers and staff around the world who provide life-saving assistance and ensure that people in need can live with greater resilience and dignity. This year it is more important than ever to honor our Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff who have stepped up and risked their lives during this unprecedented global crisis. They are a reminder to us all that the power of humanity is unstoppable.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic hundreds of thousands of new volunteers worldwide have joined a National Red Cross and Red Crescent Society– bringing extra support and comfort to communities when they need it most. For over a year now, more than 1 million Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers are out there supporting communities in need, every single day. This is humanity at its best, during the worst crisis of our lifetime.

The scale of today’s global challenges is overwhelming, but I am confident that the global solidarity and global kindness from our staff and volunteers will help the world survive this pandemic and thrive again afterwards. I am so proud of the support we have provided to the massive domestic efforts of our member National Societies who have reached hundreds of millions around the globe with public health and humanitarian support over the last year.

I thank all IFRC staff for your hard work and dedication to effectively support our member National Societies during these challenging times. Together we have accomplished so much and are indeed unstoppable.

To celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, please watch and share our #UNSTOPPABLE campaign video.

Best wishes,

Jagan Chapagain
