National Society Development (NSD) department.

Key Focus Areas

The primary function of the National Society Development (NSD) department is to enhance effective service delivery to the most vulnerable populations through the support of staff and volunteers across regional and branch levels nationwide.

The department operates within the following thematic areas:

This program acts as a vital link between Headquarters, Branches, and other programs. It focuses on decentralization, establishing regional offices, and building the capacity of Branches to empower them. The NSD department supports the institutional growth of branches and manages volunteer development. Volunteers receive leadership training to enhance their ability to serve vulnerable communities. Additionally, the program promotes Twinning Cooperation between local branches and other National Societies, fostering mutual capacity building and global understanding. This creates a strong network of 31 branches that connects grassroots units to the headquarters.

This program raises awareness about the Red Cross Movement’s Fundamental Principles, humanitarian values, International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and the activities of the Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS). The goal is to ensure these principles are understood, respected, and applied nationwide. The program also leads various campaigns aligned with the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, such as promoting the use of the Red Cross/Red Crescent emblem.

The department enhances the organization's oversight and strategic direction through regular governance forums, where key issues are discussed, and feedback is given. Its goal is to provide high-level support to TRCS branches and regional teams at both management and governance levels, promoting strong leadership for long-term sustainability. The Governance Structure includes County, Regional, and National levels, with the organization led by an Elected Governor

Members and volunteers are the foundation of the Tanzania Red Cross Society. Volunteerism is a key driver of TRCS’s success, helping millions of vulnerable individuals in times of need. The department focuses on expanding the membership and volunteer base, improving recruitment, engagement, deployment, training, and retention of volunteers.

Tanzania Red Cross Society’s goal of Resource Mobilization direction is to promote resource mobilization and fundraising activities, build capacities of staff and volunteers to actively engage with potential partners and donors in accomplishing TRCS mission activities, establishing long-term and short-term strategic partnerships with local and international sponsors while saving the most vulnerable community members. The RM component is also engaged in the promotion of memberships and individual giving, placement of donation boxes throughout the country as well as organization of public awareness raising and fundraising campaigns.

The Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) places a strong emphasis on youth engagement, intending to empower young people to become agents of positive change in their communities. By focusing on key areas such as governance and leadership, youth livelihood and economic empowerment, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, life and health protection, and climate action, TRCS aims to nurture the next generation of leaders.
TRCS seeks to build capable young leaders who can drive governance reforms and serve as role models. The Youth Livelihood and Economic Empowerment program equips youth with sustainable income-generating skills. For peacebuilding and conflict prevention, TRCS offers training in advocacy and conflict resolution.
